On May 9, 1864, the 2nd Indiana Cavalry was engaged with Confederate forces at Varnells Station, Georgia, and was forced to retreat beneath the heavy fire of the rebel forces. In the retreat the brigade commander lost his horse, and was in grave danger of being captured by the enemy.

Sergeant Daniel Ferrier, realizing his plight and the danger the brigade losing its highest-ranking officer, dismounted and gave his own horse to the officer so that he could rally his disorganized troops. As a result of this personal sacrifice, Sergeant Ferrier was himself captured and confined in a Confederate prison camp, from which he later escaped. After great hardship in enemy territory, he eventually reached the Union lines.
